This is a map of content on the evidence — genetic, historical, and archaeological — for a massive, long-running inequality in male reproductive access that emerged with the rise of agriculture and states, and peaked in the age of empires.
The core finding: somewhere between roughly 10,000 and 2,000–3,000 years ago (8,000 BCE down to about 1,000 BCE, the Bronze Age and age of empires), a small number of dominant males came to control disproportionate reproductive access to women, while the bulk of males left little or no genetic legacy. The Y-chromosome record preserves this as a striking bottleneck.
