Thinking about "reps" and how to get good at, for example, designing or writing.

Practice make not make perfect, but it certainly makes better.

Then the question of reps of what?

[Here's where i'd love something other than linear, vertical text … where i could turn this into a canvas … i'm mean sure i could with excalidraw but then i'd lose the affordances of this text … hmmmm]

  • Meditation and concentration
  • Design (get good quality sites, don't aim to be brilliant)
  • Sharing and marketing
  • Writing

I note i put writing at end of the list yet it is probably at the top. The truth is I'm not sure i'm fascinated by writing as much as patterning (aka sensemaking) and writing is interesting because it is vehicle for sharing that. (That said I love poetry).

Aside

There's a reason web pages are linear rather than a canvas (cf that article of Frank Chimero about web design). It's not about the constraint per se of the browser. It's about the linearity of thought, the need to constrain (help?) the user find a direction to travel in. Pages that have both horizontal and vertical already create confusion. Let's alone a canvas where i can wander all over the place. The canvas is great for creating btw … and it's not great for presenting.

For example, take Excalidraw. I love using Excalidraw or other whiteboarding tools. And it's great for personal or group brainstorming … and you generally can't share that result to someone else without a lot of guidance (or reworking the canvas to provide a clear path of navigation).
